Yesterday, we saw President Barack Obama stand up and support equal rights for all. I am proud to stand with a majority of New Jersey voters and Americans that support marriage equality. Like the President, I believe that LGBT couples deserve the same rights and legal protections as straight couples, including the right to marry the person they love.
As a sponsor of the marriage equality legislation passed by the New Jersey State Legislature this year, I was appalled when Governor Christie vetoed the legislation and suggested that the civil rights of our fellow Americans be put to a vote. That’s not leadership. We need strong leaders and grass roots support to guarantee civil rights for all Americans.
There will undoubtedly be opposition but we need to stand strong together.
