The problem with holding the debt ceiling hostage is that millions of people’s livelihoods are on the line. But Republicans don’t seem to care — they’re treating this as a game.
If the U.S. defaults on its debt, our economy will suffer and jobs will be destroyed. Social security benefits and veterans’ benefits could be suspended. And retirement savings of workers across the country will plummet as American markets suffer a self-inflicted wound.
