Hi, I’m Nina. In July 2022, I walked more than 240 miles, tracing the Mokelumne River from my house to where my drinking water comes from. I documented my journey and now we are raising money to make an educational film to bring into schools to teach youth where their water comes from.
We live in a world where we are so disconnected from the water that even though we use it everyday, we often have no idea which rivers and reservoirs bring it to our taps in the first place. How are we supposed to protect our waters and solve these problems when we are so removed from them?
I didn’t know where my water came from until I was 26 years old. I want the next generation to grow up knowing this information so it can inform their futures.

Why?
- To help people understand where their water comes from and inspire them to be part of a solution
- To weave connections between urban residents, farmers in the Sacramento Delta region, plants and animals of the up-river ecology areas, and more
- To bring awareness and respect to the life-giving source that is the Mokelumne River
- To create a sense of belonging for humans within the larger water cycle, increasing our ability to cope with and solve changing water resource issues due to climate change
You can become a water protector! Thank you so much for supporting this project!
Your gift will help me:
Walk my waters! ($20,000 already raised!):
- Route planning and scouting (creating a map of the trail, scouting sections of the walk, asking private landowners to walk on their land, asking Indigenous tribes to walk on their ancestral land, etc)
- Logistics planning (planning meals, food and water drops, identifying emergency protocols and emergency contacts along the route, etc).
- Gear needed (renting GPS devices for safety and navigation, camping equipment, renting a support vehicle to shadow the walk, etc)
Document the story through a short film ($60,000 needed):
- Hiring the film crew: support local filmmakers to accompany me in the field throughout parts of the journey to create a powerful documentary
- Edit the footage into an educational film to be shown in schools across the Bay Area and perhaps the country
Bringing the film into public schools ($10,000 needed):
- Create the curriculum: informational packets and toolkits for teachers to use when bringing the film into their class
- Pay educators to go into public schools to show the students the film and talk about where water comes from.
Thank you for being one of the water protectors! I’m so grateful to be walking this journey alongside you
