Color Of Change is launching our Home For The Holidays initiative to give the gift of light and warmth to Black families across Baltimore, Detroit, Flint, and Newark.
As we prepare to reflect on the year and enjoy a holiday season of togetherness with our loved ones, we know this time of year too many in our community struggle to keep the electricity on and their homes warm. These are our Black elders and countless Black families with young children at risk of staying in the dark or freezing cold because of unaffordable energy bills.
Donate today to support Color Of Change’s Home For The Holidays. Each dollar goes towards keeping the lights and heat on for a Black family in need.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT: Decades of neglect and environmentally racist policies created the immoral “energy poverty” crisis we see today. Black families make up half of the “energy poor” — households at risk of utility shut-off because of out-of-reach heat or electricity bills. Many Black parents — instead of picking out holiday gifts — are forced to pick between food on the table, life-saving medicine, and other necessities to keep on the lights and the heat. More than 10% risk freezing to death because they cannot afford to keep their homes at safe temperatures.
