In 2023, voters flipped a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court to make it a progressive majority court, which led to a ruling on Fair Maps and allowed Democrats to pick up an additional 10 seats in the Assembly and four in the State Senate.
One of the progressive justices, Ann Walsh Bradley, is retiring in 2025, leaving an open seat. If it flips back to conservative, several policies could be reversed or progressive laws could be blocked putting Wisconsin back where it was two years ago.
Susan Crawford, a county circuit court judge, is the pro-equality candidate in this race. She has a record of defending rights in her various roles ranging from the Wisconsin Attorney General’s office to private practice where she defended workers, voters, and reproductive rights. She will be a welcome replacement for outgoing Justice Walsh Bradley. Crawford has been endorsed by out Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D) and the Wisconsin Democratic Party.
Brad Schimel served as Wisconsin’s former Attorney General from 2015 to 2019 and and has an anti-equality record. On his website, he indicates that he is anti-LGBTQ and is clearly against the transgender community with a transphobic statement about bathrooms. Schimel is also firmly anti-choice, and would likely rule for Republicans to again gerrymander districts for their own power.
The election will be held on April 1, 2025.
