Protect Public Housing Families

In 2019, the Trump regime proposed a rule change that would prohibit “mixed-status” families from living in public and other subsidized housing. This rule change generated the submission of 30,000 public comments: the most in the history of the U.S. Trump was voted out of office before any work toward this rule change could be completed, and the Biden administration withdrew it from consideration.

Now, Trump and his cronies are restarting the fight, and we can’t rely on the electoral cycle to save us this time. On July 16th, 2025, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) posted a notice to begin the process of changing this rule. We don’t have all the details yet, but based on the 2019 impact report, if the rule passes, it could evict 11,000 people in Los Angeles alone, potentially leading to a 20% spike in homelessness.

With the increased presence of ICE and federal authorities in LA and laws and executive orders aiming to steadily increase the criminalization of homelessness, this regime is manufacturing a crisis, adding fuel to an already raging fire. Our members affected by these rising tides of fascism have been sheltering at home to avoid being kidnapped by ICE, and now they have to worry about whether they can stay in their homes, preparing to name eldest children as heads of household if needed, making plans for their children to have caretakers, wondering how long they have together as a family.

We urgently need your support to keep families housed together. This rule was widely unpopular among Americans the first time, and we need every hand in this fight to protect our families and communities from falling into homelessness and/or the deportation machine. Contrary to republican propaganda, public housing works, and we’re not going to let the Trump regime continue to dismantle it, destroying families and communities.
