The President was impeached. Now what?

Tonight, the House of Representatives voted to impeach the President of the United States.

Even before the vote goes to the Senate, we can be assured that the decision has already been made. The Republican majority in the Senate has already said that they will NOT impeach this President. In fact, they have already began celebrating the fact that there are not enough votes in the Senate for impeachment or removal. The problem with this is that Donald Trump was not elected by popular vote. He was elected by the Electoral College, which essentially undermined the will of the people.

The media optics are the saddest I've ever seen. On a split screen, the House of Representatives has just voted to impeach the President, on the other side of the screen the President is hosting a support rally and telling the audience that he doesn't even feel like he is being impeached. The reality is that our nation is divided along party lines, and as long as this is the case there will continue to be gridlock in Washington.

Here is why:

As Donald Trump told us in 2015, before he took office..."The system is rigged". Unfortunately, because of the Electoral College, gerrymandering and our two party political system, it is nearly impossible for most of us to be heard. When it comes to voting, most Americans fall somewhere in the middle, and don't ascribe to one side or the other, but even when we do vote, it is possible for our vote to be subverted, which is what is happening now.

Sadly, our system of governance easily gives rise to radical extremism. And, our regular voting behaviors have subjected us to the kind of government the framers of the constitution feared most, but we have the power to shift the status quo, if we would vote in our own best interest.

Unless the majority of Americans, who favor impeachment, go to the polls to vote Trump and Congressional Republicans out in November, this impeachment means nothing. The power of impeachment ultimately rests with the people when we exercise the right to vote and select legislators without ulterior motives and give them the power to change the corrupt system.

The House fulfilled their constitutional obligation to impeach. The Senate promises they will subvert the rule of law for the sake of partisan politics. If they won't defend the constitution over partisan politics, the only way to change things is to vote them out.

Although I hold a doctorate degree in Public Policy, I never really engaged in partisan politics. I always voted my conscience and selected the candidate that I thought was best qualified for the job. Donald Trump has taught us the seriousness of our vote, and the way in which political extremism is costing all of us. While the majority of us are struggling with the high cost of health care, low wage jobs, and having to sacrifice essentials or work two jobs just to make it, the wealthiest 1% continues to get wealthy because we keep choosing wealthy status quo politicians to represent us.

If we want to change the political landscape and insure real change in DC, we must flip districts like Ohio's 8th, which is traditionally a Republican district. To do this, I need your help! We must raise money quickly in order to put the infrastructure in place to launch a serious campaign.

Please help by making a donation today. Every dollar can make a measurable impact in a strategic campaign.
