Democracy is on the ballot in Ohio

The Ohio special election taking place this August is one of the most important elections that most Americans have never heard of. And that’s how MAGA Republicans want it.

Earlier this year, Ohio Republicans banned August elections because they have such low voter turnout. But then, pro-choice groups announced a plan to allow Ohioans to vote on a ballot measure this November that would enshrine reproductive rights in the state Constitution.

As of now voters can change the constitution with a simple majority. And this amendment codifying abortion rights has the support of 59% of Ohio voters.

So what did the GOP do? They orchestrated a referendum to increase the threshold for amending the constitution to 60%. And they scheduled it in August when they knew voter turnout would be low.

Ohio’s Republican Secretary of State said this special election is 100% about thwarting the popular effort to codify reproductive rights in the Ohio state constitution. But the implications will go further, because the higher threshold will also apply to a ballot initiative next year that could finally unrig Ohio’s electoral maps, which are some of the most gerrymandered in the country.

This obscene power grab by MAGA Republicans cannot succeed. So we’re looking to deploy our most effective voter mobilization programs to ensure the ballot initiative fails. We know our volunteer network can help make the difference in this race, and we’re counting on our grassroots donors to help fund this crucial work.

Donate now to help us win this election and lay the groundwork for codifying abortion rights, securing fair maps, and defeating the MAGA assault on our democracy.
