This year was a tough year for Iowans who support common sense gun laws. We saw one of the most sweeping gun bills make it through both houses of the legislature and go on to be signed by the governor. And while we are extremely concerned about many facets of the law including Stand Your Ground, we were able to celebrate our accomplishment of strong grassroots action that convinced legislators to take bold steps to keep background checks and permits in place to to keep guns off of college campuses.
But our work in Iowa is not even close to over. Next year the corporate gun lobby will be back and they will be asking for even more - more guns for more people in more places with fewer background checks and other safeguards. And Moms will be there to be the voice of the majority of Iowans who support keeping our background check and permitting system just as it is.
On June 2-3, National Gun Violence Awareness Day, we will pause to reflect on the last year. We will use this time to remember the more than 90 people shot and killed daily in the US. We will remember the survivors of domestic violence, unintentional shootings, suicide, homicide and more. We will also think ahead to the many ways we can work to bring all Iowans together to speak out for common sense, responsible gun ownership.
And that is why we are asking you for your donation today to help us continue to move the needle on gun safety.
Over the last year, our chapter has grown by more than 300% and that is thanks in no small part to the help of people like you. If you would like to see support for survivors, more gun safety education, and more awareness of this epidemic, would you please give today?
