Support Mai Vang

About the Candidate

Mai Vang is the daughter of Hmong refugees, who fled war in Laos to settle in Sacramento where Mai was born and raised as the eldest of 16 children. She is a proud product of local public schools and was the first in her family to attend college. Prior to being elected, Mai worked as a community organizer to improve health and educational outcomes for children and families in south Sacramento. In 2020, Mai was elected to represent Sacramento’s Eighth City Council District, after previously being elected to Sacramento City School Board in 2016. Under her leadership, the city established the first-ever Sacramento Children’s Fund, dedicating $10 million annually to support children and youth impacted by poverty, violence, and trauma. By working with community advocates, she led one of the most linguistically diverse community-run vaccination clinics in the nation during the COVID-19 pandemic. She secured over $40 million in public investments to strengthen neighborhoods and improve the quality of life for youth, seniors, and families. She created and co-lead the Food Justice Task Force to secure $1.5 million to address food insecurity in her community and secured the city purchase of 102 acres of undeveloped land in South Sacramento for the future development of affordable housing, civic amenities, and an economic engine to drive revenue in the district. Her leadership also secured the first-ever city-wide language access coordinator to ensure government was accessible to everyday people.
