About the Candidate

Durham County Commission Chair Nida Allam is the first Muslim woman ever elected to public office in North Carolina.

The daughter of Indian and Pakistani immigrants, Nida grew up in District 4, was educated in NC public schools, and attended NC State University, intending to enter a STEM career. But in 2015, three of her closest friends, Deah Barakat, Yusor Abu-Salha, and Razan Abu-Salha were killed in a crime motivated by anti- Muslim hate. Despite being personally shattered, she was moved to enter politics to make sure that her community had a seat at the table.

Following a groundbreaking campaign for the Durham County Board of Commissioners in 2020, in 2022, Nida first ran to represent North Carolina’s 4th Congressional District. Despite millions in conservative outside spending that made the primary the most expensive in state history, Nida came up just nine points short of victory, dramatically overperforming expectations with a cost-per-vote that was only a third of her opponent’s. Now she returns to run for this seat, with shifted district lines and even more community support.

In the years since, Nida has focused on growing her family and serving the people of Durham County, delivering progressive policy wins with a focus on affordability. As Chair of the Board of Commissioners, Nida has played an instrumental part in raising the minimum wage for county employees and led

the charge to secure property tax relief for low-income Durham residents. Nida lives in Durham with her husband and two adorable children.
