About the Candidate

Saikat Chakrabarti is the son of Indian immigrants who started his career in San Francisco as a coder before becoming immensely successful as one of the earliest employees at tech startup Stripe. Disillusioned with Silicon Valley, Chakrabarti joined Bernie Sanders’ 2016 campaign building much of the tech infrastructure and tools used to power Bernie’s grassroots movement and campaign. After the campaign, alongside other Bernie alums, he co-founded and launched Justice Democrats, in an effort to recruit and elect a new generation of leaders to take on the Democratic establishment. In that first cycle, he helped manage Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s successful insurgent campaign before becoming her Chief of Staff in Congress. During his time in Congress, he helped write and launch the Green New Deal — the left’s banner economic framework for tackling the climate crisis. Since then, he founded and leads a policy think tank, New Consensus, focused on building comprehensive plans for the government to deliver economic justice and challenge the status quo Washington Consensus. He lives in Duboce Triangle with his wife and daughter. He is running to make San Francisco affordable through a national housing plan, implement a bold clean economy agenda where everyone prospers, and stopping corruption in our democracy by ending congressional stock trading and creating publicly financed elections. Tech oligarchs have already formed a Super PAC, Abundant Future, funded by Silicon Valley and Crypto billionaires, to attack Chakrabarti with false mailers.
