Luzerne County, Pennsylvania is a place with more than its fair share of environmental challenges: multiple Superfund sites, abandoned mines sprinkling the landscape, and the inevitable, crushing pollution from unchecked fracking and big industry.
As recently as 2023, the Luzerne County Council was completely dominated by Republicans, 10-1.
In spite of the daunting odds, JanePAC went ten toes down in 2023, partnering with a local group — Luzerne United — to back a slate of five climate candidates. That investment paid off big time: four of the five won, decimating the long-held Republican stronghold.
Fast forward to today: on November 4, we’re back in Luzerne and ready to double down on those 2023 gains. We’ve endorsed three climate champions for the Luzerne County Council and if we can win just two seats, we can flip the council to a pro-environment majority.
Look, in just two election cycles our movement has the chance to flip a Republican body to a pro-climate one in a state with huge influence on the broader Fossil Fuel Industry.
