DC Fair Elections Overview:

To encourage more candidates with a wider variety of lived experiences and to reduce the corrupting influence of big donors in politics, DC enacted a Fair Elections system.

Candidates who agree to a lower contribution limit and not to

accept contributions from business entities or PACs and other organizations receive a 5:1 match on DC contributions.

Example: a DC resident contributes $10 to the campaign. The campaign receives that $10 contribution and *also* a $50 match (5x$10) from the Fair Elections Fund.

To qualify for the program a Mayoral candidate must accept the limitation and raise at least $40,000 from DC residents and also have at least 1,000 DC residents contribute at least $5.

Under the fair elections system, DC residents may contribute up to $200 to a Mayoral campaign.

The system has worked very well to make DC politics more inclusive, to reduce the role of lobbyists, and increase the role of community leaders and all engaged Washingtonians.

Councilmember Lewis George used this program in her initial election campaign in 2020 and it allowed her to run a movement-driven campaign without spending any of her energy on “call time” talking to big donors about their priorities so they’d write four-figure checks. Instead she focused on connecting with neighbors, community leaders, and people doing the work of improving our city.
