Hello, I’m John Norwood.
Iowa is approaching a fiscal cliff, and most Iowans barely hear it talked about. The State Treasurer should be a visible, trusted voice who helps the public understand what’s really happening with our economy, our budgets, and our long-term obligations — not someone who stays quiet until it’s too late. That’s why I’m running: to show up across Iowa, listen to Iowans’ concerns, and use real-time financial data and judgment to keep my finger on the pulse of Iowa’s economy and bring that information into the public square.
Right now, Iowa faces a $1+ billion structural budget deficit and state leaders are sticking their heads in the sand. Iowa ranks #51 for worst US economy (which includes Washington DC). Our agricultural economy has been hit hard — with corn and soybean farmers losing $100–$200 per acre on average due to disrupted markets and trade policies. At the same time, tens of millions of dollars in tax credits and subsidies are flowing to large corporations that don’t need them, while small businesses, workers, and rural communities feel left behind.
Iowans are practical people. We balance our checkbooks, plan ahead, and speak up when something doesn’t add up. As Treasurer, I will do the same — asking tough questions early, increasing transparency around taxing and spending decisions, and protecting commitments that matter, including protecting IPERS and the retirement security of 400,000 Iowans, which puts $2.5 billion a year back into local economies.
Before we drive our fiscal car into the ditch, it’s time for a Treasurer Iowans know, trust, and hear from — someone who will speak plainly, act independently, and help get Iowa back on track.
