Women Inspiring Leadership and Democracy (WILD)

Live Here, Lead Here

We are Women Inspiring Leadership and Democracy, and we are a grassroots movement built on the fierce belief that when women lead, democracy thrives.

We stand on the shoulders of giants. Texas has a powerful, inspiring narrative of women's resilience and agency, a legacy of foremothers who defied expectations and reshaped our state. Think of Edith Wilmans, the first woman elected to the Texas House, who showed us that our voices belong in the halls of power. Or the trailblazing trio of Hortense Sparks Ward, Hattie Leah Henenberg, and Ruth Virginia Brazzil, who formed the first all-woman Texas Supreme Court, proving that justice wears a woman's face.

We remember powerful and progressive state leaders like Ann Richards, and Lady Bird Johnson, who beautified our state and our nation while serving as First Lady. And in the fight for civil rights and social justice, Texas women have been at the forefront: Jovita Idár, who literally stood in the doorway against injustice; Christia V. Adair and Juanita Craft, whose tireless organizing ended the white primary and desegregated our state; and the incomparable Barbara Jordan, whose eloquence and integrity broke barriers in both the Texas Senate and the U.S. Congress. More recently, Opal Lee, the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," ensured that a pivotal moment in American history finally received national recognition. These are just a few examples of the countless Texas women who fought, persisted, and won, often against formidable odds.

While we draw strength from our history, we must also confront our present. The lives of Texas women are profoundly impacted by a complex web of laws, often imposing significant restrictions on our human rights and economic security.

Our mission is clear: to build a future where women's voices shape policy, power, and progress at every level of government. This isn't just about electing more women—though that is crucial. It’s about creating a society where every woman's full potential is unleashed, her rights are protected, and her voice drives progress.

The challenges before us are significant, but so is our resolve. Just as our foremothers fought for property rights, suffrage, and civil liberties, we too will fight for a truly equitable Texas.

Women Inspiring Leadership and Democracy is more than an organization; it’s a movement. It's a call to action for every Texas woman who believes in a future where our voices are heard, our rights are respected, and our potential is limitless. Let us unite, organize, and mobilize. Let's build on the legacy of courage and determination that defines Texas women. Together, we will shape policy, demand progress, and lead our communities into a future where all women thrive.
