I lost 2 friends from unintentional gun deaths and 1 from suicide before I was 18 years of age. One was a hunting accident, his best friend thought there was a deer in the bush, but it was my friend. The other boy was playing in a friend's garage, found a gun and while looking at it was shot in the head and died. This made an indelible mark on my life. I always asked if there were guns in homes before my children entered. But other than that, I never found a place to make a difference. Then Sandy Hook happened. When our congress did nothing to strengthen background checks or permits to help make it harder for people who intend harm to get access to guns, I gave up hope. It was not until 2015 when a friend of mine told me about "Intruder Drills" at her school did I decide it was time to stop doing nothing! My daughter and son are training to become teachers. I do not want them to have to have these drills and I don't want my grandchildren to think they are not safe at school. I found Moms Demand Action by googling, "MAD but with guns". I joined, and within 6 months became the leader of the Cary/Apex group. I have given the BeSmart presentation several times to large groups, which if you know me was incredibly stressful. I have called hundreds of people I do not know which is also a stress inducing activity for me. I have met people with incredible stories who have survived shootings or lost a relative to gun violence. So I will Wear Orange on June 2 to raise awareness of Gun Violence. 93 people are killed every day by guns, will you help me raise money for Moms Demand Action? Part of your donation will stay right here in NC! Which is important to help us grow our base so we can fight the ideas of guns on campuses, no background checks or permit-less carry. Any little bit helps! $5 or $10 adds up!
Thank you,
KaKi
