Kelly Martinez is the 31st Sheriff of San Diego County and the first woman to hold the position in the department’s 175-year history.
She began her journey as a Deputy Sheriff in 1985 and rose through every rank in the department, including Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Commander, Assistant Sheriff, and Undersheriff, before being elected to lead the agency.
As Sheriff, she oversees a $1.2 billion budget and leads a workforce of more than 4,700 authorized employees. Her administration is responsible for providing safety services across 4,200 square miles, including nine contract cities, the county’s unincorporated areas, seven detention facilities, and the security of the Superior Court system.
Sheriff Martinez believes that public safety is built on a foundation of strong, reciprocal relationships. To her, true safety begins in the community, and the Sheriff’s Office is most effective when it operates with the trust and cooperation of the people it protects.
