Kennedy became involved in Western New York’s political landscape while in college, volunteering on Brian Higgins’ State Assembly campaign. He would go on to be appointed to the Erie County Legislature in 2004 at the age of 28 to fill the vacancy left open by Mark Schroeder’s election to the Assembly. Kennedy was reelected three times, representing the 2nd District and served as chair of the Economic Development committee. In 2010, Kennedy ran for State Senate, defeating longtime incumbent William Stachowski in the primary election, and then Assemblyman Jack Quinn III in the general election. Kennedy took office in 2011.
A lifelong Democrat and Western New Yorker, Kennedy and his wife Katie have raised their three children, Connor, Eireann, and Padraic in the City of Buffalo. Kennedy and his wife met while he working as an Occupational Therapist at Bornhava, a preschool for students with special needs. Kennedy spent nearly a decade as a practicing OT, helping both children and seniors recover from injuries and improve their day-to-day quality of life. Katie currently works as a Physical Therapist at Catholic Health. Their oldest son Connor attends college in Maine, while their younger two children are currently Buffalo Public Schools students.
