Color Of Change

YOUR NEXT STEP: Help us hire a special investigator to help unearth corruption in Saraland!

Enough is enough-- it's time we #ProtectBlackWomen. Donate to help us hire a private investigator to dig deeper into the political relationships of Saraland city officials!

On Monday, June 18, we ramped up the pressure in Chikesia's case-- we bused in people from Atlanta, Birmingham, and Mobile, and delivered 50,000 petition signatures straight to Saraland city attorney Rutens' doorstep.

Unfortunately, this fight is not over, and there's a lot of facts that are still being hidden by Saraland prosecutors and officials. A private investigator will help provide the type of independent oversight we need to uncover the truth about Saraland and hold those responsible for Chikesia’s arrest and trauma fully accountable.

Here's what we know so far:

  • Saraland police and Waffle House employees accused Chikesia of being drunk and argumentative, but they refuse to release the official surveillance video to justify their claims

  • Saraland City Attorney, Andrew Rutens is a private contractor who is appointed by the Mayor

  • The lawyer who prosecuted Chikesia is also a private contractor who’s accountable to no one except for the people who pay him

This is nothing new. We've seen officials use the same victim blaming tactics to describe Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Rekia Boyd and countless other Black victims of police violence.

The petition delivery action was a huge step in creating real pressure on Rutens. But we invested a lot of resources in this action, and now our budget is limited. Donate to help us hire a private investigator, uncover the truth, and end this nightmare for Chikesia.
