South Fulton Mayor khalid • Black On Purpose

I believe that politics is the last, viable means of nonviolent social change for Black people in this country.

Maynard Jackson, Atlanta's first Black Mayor)

Mayor khalid (pronounced cuh-LEED) is leading a generation of young activists from protests to politics. In 2017 this Working Families Party member made history, becoming America's first #BlackLivesMatter organizer elected to public office. In 2021 he made history again, becoming the first Socialist mayor elected in a big city in 50 years, and the first openly LGBT mayor of a big city in the South.

khalid is a mission to Atlanta's twin City, South Fulton, Georgia — the Blackest City in America — "Black on Purpose." This means holding corrupt police and elected officials accountable for their actions and making the city a laboratory for economic, housing and restorative justice policies aimed at improving the lives of African Americans; and by extension, all people. But powerful forces are working to undermine his People's Agenda.
