The Kentucky Peoples Union (KPU) fights for working people in Appalachian Kentucky. Founded as a project of SURJ in 2022 in small town, majority-white Ashland, Kentucky, KPU has grown into a powerful organizing home in the region with over 100 members and dozens of leaders.
In 2023, KPU launched local housing campaigns to protect the rights of renters in Ashland by fighting for a public registry of landlords and the adoption of URLTA. We’ve knocked on over 1,000 doors of local tenants to talk to them about their experiences and organize them into our campaigns. In 2024, we're continuing to push our local government to adopt these measures, and we're working on location city council races!
KPU works to give working people a better option than racism and division. We organize in the same neighborhoods where the KKK drops flyers. We work in a state with a far right Republican supermajority. Under these conditions, we are finding thousands of local residents who need change- and who are ready to fight for it.
Your donation will help us grow this work in Ashland and across the region.
