Leila Staton, a 22 year old self-described political nerd, running for Iowa State House District 54, will be visiting the Bay Area in April. For those of us eager to support the next generation of progressive political leaders, come join us for a fundraising house party in Kensington on Wed, April 22 at 5:30 pm.

Since we live in such a blue area, it is rare that we get the opportunity to help change the political balance of power anywhere in the country. Leila is from a very red district where the Democratic party has not run a candidate since 2020, and when Leila turned 18, she had nobody she could vote for. So, when she turned 21, she decided to put her values into action by announcing her candidacy.

Leila is conducting a grassroots campaign, knocking on hundreds of doors in District 54, and hearing clearly the people’s priorities (strong public schools, protecting family farms, expanding health care accessibility and affordability (including OBGYN), and improving water quality).

People’s response to her candidacy has been overwhelmingly positive, and her campaign is depending entirely on small donor funds. Unlike her opponent, Leila will not accept PAC money.

Best of all, Leila can win, breaking the supermajority in the Iowa State House legislature. She has been endorsed by Run For Something, and local press have rated this race as competitive.
