The election for Senate District 22 has candidates who are very distinct from each other.
Lew strongly supports home rule and the constitutional authority of locally elected school boards to operate, control, and supervise their public schools.
The state has a legitimate responsibility to establish standards and ensure every Florida student receives a quality education, as one example of state duty, but Tallahassee should not use that responsibility as an excuse to micromanage local schools mandate how to develop our naighborhoods or override communities simply because state leaders disagree with the local decision.
As Senator, Lew will oppose unnecessary preemptions of school boards, counties, and municipalities. He will also review existing preemptions and support repealing those that prevent local governments and school districts from responding effectively to the needs of their own communities.
Local voters elect school board members for a reason. State government should be their partner, not their replacement.
