Pennsylvania United’s grassroots organizing focuses on working-class and multiracial communities in Western PA, where people have lost faith in civic life and in a political process that never meets their needs. PA United engages people by listening to and understanding communities’ pressing concerns and interests, and by connecting with voters around these local issues.
In 2024, PA United’s contact rate -- the percentage of people they successfully reached by phone or through canvassing -- was 22%, more than four times the average contact rate of Democratic and progressive operations. The organization stays active and visible in communities before, during, and after elections, which allows it to form long-term relationships with voters. This is the foundation upon which Pennsylvania United reconnects working-class people to power and builds a multi-racial working-class movement.
The city of Aliquippa is one example: This distressed former steel town with a population of about 9,000 struggles with poverty and gun violence. A national candidate making a brief stop in Aliquippa isn’t going to solve these problems. But Beaver County United, the local PA United affiliate, holds regular events in the area that build a sense of community cohesion and belonging so that when tragedy or hardship strikes, citizens have a place to turn to and take meaningful action. That also means that when Heaven Lee, the PA United organizer for Beaver County United, recruited a team of young people to knock on every door and urge people to vote, people listened.
Your contribution will help PA United build democracy from the ground up and ensure that every person, no matter who they are, has a voice.
