Colorado House Majority Project

Love is Love

You’re not going to believe this: we could have marriage equality in Colorado very, very soon.

Colorado’s LGBT families have waited too long already. The time is NOW for Colorado to ensure all families are equal under our laws.

Thanks to your support, we were able to take the majority in the State House in 2012 and pass the Colorado Civil Unions Act, so that committed LGBT couples have equal protections as married couples under the law. Unfortunately, we were barred from passing full marriage equality because of a constitutional amendment passed in 2006 that defined marriage as between a man and a woman.

Since 2006, however, much progress has been made and it’s clear that the tide has turned. Voters in 2012 were so outraged that Republicans blocked civil unions that they resoundingly kicked them out of the majority in the State House. And recent polls show that support for marriage equality is at a record high, especially among younger Coloradans.

It is clear that the 2006 electorate no longer reflects our Colorado values. The time is now to overturn this amendment. Will you pitch in $25, $50, or $100 today so that we can continue to fight for full freedom and equality for all Colorado families?

The momentum we’ve been building over the last decade is reaching its peak, and people across the state are coming together and calling for change. Last week, the Boulder County Clerk and Recorder took a bold step and began issuing marriage licenses to loving LGBT couples in Colorado who have waited far too long. And just yesterday, Governor Hickenlooper and other leaders formally asked the federal district court in Colorado to rule the gay marriage ban unconstitutional.

Speaker Mark Ferrandino had it right today when he held a press conference with his fellow LGBT legislators and said, “This is a major step forward, but we should take the final step today and have full marriage equality for everyone.”

The Utah marriage equality ban that was just overturned in the 10th circuit court of appeals in Denver seems headed for the United States Supreme Court. Now we must wait for the nation’s highest court to make the final call – but waiting doesn’t mean standing idly by.

Donate now to ‘take the final step’ and support the team that brought Civil Unions to Colorado, and who keeps fighting for marriage equality every day. Without your support in 2012 we never would have taken the Colorado House majority. Help us keep it with a generous donation of $25, $50, or $100 today.
