Mālama Kakanilua is raising funds for archaeological monitors who will be going into the Lahaina Burn Zone to identify artifacts. We are also supporting our Lāhui in any way, small or large, to recover and become a solid community.
Mālama Kakanilua is also presently engaged in direct action resistance/protection of ʻiwi kūpuna, and aims to stop the Grand Wailea Resort from constructing 151 hotel units, swimming pools, new wings, and injection wells in known Kanaka Maoli burial grounds. The hui stands with other Kanaka Maoli groups pursuing this case to ensure that ʻiwi kūpuna are protected, safe, and at peace, and halt the Grand Waileaʻs hotel expansion efforts due to numerous environmental violations and dismissal of Kanaka Maoli claims to defend the ʻiwi and traditional and customary practices.
Mālama Kakanilua’s main mission is to protect and preserve vested rights of the iwi kupuna (ancestral bones and burial places) as granted in the Kingdom of Hawai’i Civil Code Act of 1860 - ‘for the Protection of Sepulture Kumu Kanawai Ko Hawai’i Pae Aina.'
Mālama Kakanilua remains steadfast in upholding the integrity of the above stated Kumu Kanawai, ‘as to any disinternment, conveying away or destruction of burial places Mauka to Makai.’ (mountains to the sea)
Critically, we recognize the inherent rights of the iwi kupuna as Kanaka Maoli. (Original Nations and Peoples of the Hawaiin Kingdom) Our advocacy begins with the restoration of the ‘ola (health and well-being) of Kanaka Maoli.
