A LEGAL DEFENSE FUND FOR WILLIAM MARCUS WILSON Is Self-Defense of Black Life Protected Under Law?
William Marcus Wilson, 21 years old Black student from Sharpsburg, Georgia, was in Statesboro visiting with his white girlfriend. They had gotten a late-night meal from Taco Bell when a truckload of angry white men accosted them. The men threatened Wilson and his girlfriend and even attempted to run them off the road. A terrified Wilson defended his life and the life of his girlfriend with a firearm he legally carried. One of the occupants of the truck, Haley Hutcheson, 17, was killed.
After fully cooperating with law enforcement investigating the death, William Marcus Wilson responded to warrants issued by the Statesboro Police Department for one count of Felony Murder and one count of Aggravated Assault.
Despite misleading media releases by the Statesboro Police Department and other reports suggesting this was random violence or even ANTIFA inspired, the investigation into what really happened on Veterans Memorial Parkway is far from over. Each day brings new information about the decedent and actions of the Mason Edward Glisson, 18; Luke Harry Conley, 18; and Ashton Robert Deloach, 18 that contributed to this incident.
As the United States reckons with racial injustice, no aspect of #BlackLivesMatter is more in conflict with white supremacy, then when Black people defend their lives against hate. Statesboro is at a crossroads. Its a city led by its first Black Mayor, Jonathan McCollar, an administrator and longtime activist. It has a newly elected progressive city council, but the power structure and the entire apparatus of justice are white.
Given the lack of successful application of Stand Your Ground self-defense claims by Black people, is Stand Your Ground/Self-Defense of a Black Man Life Protected Under Law? The family has ordered an independent investigation that is benefiting tremendously from the information provided by persons in the community. As such, no one should not rush to judgment in this case.
As other investigative steps remain in progress, anyone with additional facts concerning the case, the decedent, or the other occupants should contact the Statesboro Police Department at 912-764-9911. Finally, the Wilson family is grateful for the strong support they have received during this difficult time.
