Matt Hughes is a public servant who has focused his efforts for the last decade on improving lives through his work for nonprofit organizations, state government, and as a Democratic leader.
Raised by a single mom and his great-grandparents, Matt grew up in subsidized housing and relied on Medicaid and food stamps. He worked hard in school and became the first in his family to graduate from college, earning degrees from the University of North Carolina.
Matt was elected to serve as chair of the Orange County Democratic Party in 2011, making him one of the youngest county chairs ever, and he’s served in state leadership, helping Democrats win elections to fight back against right-wing Republicans.
Motivated to improve his community, Matt was elected to the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners and is the first openly LGBTQ+ elected official in the town’s history. He has delivered results by bringing people together and passed the state’s first nondiscrimination ordinance.
