Michigan Black Mama's Bailout

embed errored

In Spring 2019, Michigan Liberation orchestrated the release of 15 Black Mothers in Michigan, who were unjustly imprisoned due to the immoral and unconstitutional practice of money bail, also known as wealth-based pretrial detention.

As we continued our efforts in 2020 to liberate more Black Mothers from the confines of the criminal legal system, we were confronted with the harsh realities faced by incarcerated individuals during the Covid-19 pandemic. Our focus shifted towards a Covid-19 rapid response bailout, resulting in the release of 32 individuals across Michigan.

Through our actions and community organizing, we shed light on the bail bonds industry's profit-driven motives, revealed the deep-seated social injustices that contribute to involvement with the legal system, and ignited a spark for community-driven change. What began as a bailout initiative has grown into a movement for fundamental change within Michigan's criminal legal system, fueled by our unwavering commitment to effecting tangible transformation. To date, we have liberated over 100 individuals reuniting them with their families.

In collaboration with the National Bail Out, our efforts led to the liberation of Black mothers in several Michigan counties: Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and Kalamazoo.

Join us as we launch our 2024 Black Mamas Bailout Campaign!

Your support can help secure the release of Black mothers, Black women, gender nonconforming individuals, and fem(me)s by covering their bail, fines, and fees. This assistance enables them to reunite with their families for Mother's Day and beyond.
