Meagan Alderton

Meagan Alderton for Alexandria City School Board- District C

In November of 2018, I was elected to the Alexandria City School Board and I have been working hard on behalf of our students ever since. Under my tenure we have led the charge for racial equity by putting a microscopic lens on student achievement, charging forward with a data-focused approach to decision making, and forcing strict accountability to outcomes for ALL students.

In my time on the board we have:

-worked together to develop a strategic plan focused on racial equity.

-enhanced our Multi-Tiered System of Supports holding ALL schools accountable to improving outcomes for ALL students.

-developed a robust community engagement process that led to the successful renaming of two schools in less than 1 year.

-developed budget priorities that are tightly aligned with our strategic goals.

-strategized to redevelop literacy instruction for students in grades K-2 in order to improve literacy outcomes in grades 3-12.

-accelerated facilities modernization projects in an effort to address longstanding capacity and facilities issues.

During my first term I have:

-been appointed as Chair of the Board, currently serving as the second black woman ever to be elected as Chair in the history of Alexandria City Public Schools.

-co-drafted successfully passed legislation in the Virginia General Assembly, in partnership with a member of the House of Delegates, that bolsters pre-licensure preparation for teachers in the area of crisis prevention, de-escalation, and positive behavioral interventions and supports.

-served as a member of the Educational Design Team, established to reimagine high school and lead the design in educational programming for the first ever Connected High School Network.

-served as a member of the Superintendent's Evaluation Committee, collaborating in the design and development of the Superintendent evaluation tool and annual evaluation process.

-served as a member of the Division Transition Team, working collaboratively with staff, teachers, and community stakeholders to lead the division through the various transitions required as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic, including the shift to virtual learning and the process of safely reopening our school facilities.

This is only a fraction of what has been accomplished during my term but there is still so much more to do! Now more than ever we need continuity under proven leadership so that we can continue to move the needle for our school system. I need your support to continue working on behalf of our students, supporting our teachers, and growing a dynamic school system that promotes academic excellence for ALL. We are in the midst of building a model school division, but without proven leadership, our gains are at stake.

Join me, partner with me, and support my race for re-election. Together, we can show the Commonwealth, and the nation that true racial equity starts with access to a high-quality education.
