Iona Means

A Family Legacy of Community Service

The Means family's legacy of community leadership runs deep. Iona's father, James Means, was a trailblazer as the first Black elected Clinton Township Board Member in 1956. He was known as the honorary mayor of the Quinn Road area. James Means played an integral role during times of urban renewal, as a member of the Clinton Township Planning Commission, and was celebrated for his advocacy on behalf of the community.

Iona's mother, Frances Means, stood as the cornerstone of support upon which the entire family's accomplishments were built. She made significant contributions to the township as a retired Clinton Township Employee. Frances's unwavering dedication provided the bedrock upon which their accomplishments were built. Her role as a family matriarch and her profound influence shaped the trajectory of Iona's life and achievements. Together with Iona's sister, Michelle Braswell-Means, who herself served as a Clintondale School Board Member, the family's commitment to education and community remains an enduring testament to their legacy.

The influence of Iona's grandparents, Prince Drewry and Louise Drewry, is woven into the fabric of her community engagement. Prince Drewry, Iona's grandfather, was a revered figure known for his intelligence, political involvement, and philanthropic spirit. He earned the moniker of "robin hood" for his efforts to provide coal to families in need, ensuring they could heat their homes. Prince Drewry's impact extended to education, as he played a pivotal role in recruiting the first Black teachers and principal for Clintondale Schools. His service as a Clintondale School Board Member from 1931 to 1959 left an indelible mark on the educational landscape.

Louise Drewry, Iona's grandmother, was a Housing Commission Member who actively contributed to creating better living conditions for the community. Iona's memories of her grandmother, Louise Drewry, paint a vivid picture of her commitment to unity and community strength. Louise Drewry's development of the innovative "Choir Reunion," a traveling choir that bridged churches through song, worship, and camaraderie, exemplified her dedication to bringing people together. Iona fondly recalls how this endeavor required the collective effort of children throughout the community, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose from a young age.
