It's been nearly two years since the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ordered an evidentiary hearing for Melissa Lucio, and it still has not happened. That's two years too long!
After waiting more than 22 months for the courts to act, Melissa has asked us to reinvigorate public advocacy for her. Your donation today will support our renewed efforts, as well as our work to stop executions across the United States.
While Melissa was facing an execution date from January 13 to April 25, 2022, Death Penalty Action worked closely with John Lucio, Melissa's son, and Sabrina Van Tassell, the producer/director of The State of Texas vs. Melissa. At Melissa's request, we amplified the voices of Melissa's family, and promoted the film, which thoroughly debunks the evidence used to wrongly convict Melissa Lucio, the first Hispanic woman to be sentenced to death in the state of Texas.
