Schools are meant to be a place for sanctuary, growth, and learning—not a place where children, educators, and families fear for their safety. “Our schools should be off limits,” as MFPS parent and leader Flannery Clark shared to Minnesota legislators last week. Instead, this winter our children and entire school communities faced daily trauma under ICE occupation: ICE agents abducting family members over school Zoom cameras, teargassing students while arresting educators, staging outside of elementary schools, asking 12-year-olds for identification papers. During Operation Metro Surge, our students and families have become all too familiar with the threat of ICE on our campuses and the impact that has had on us all. And, although the “surge” is over, ICE is still here in Minnesota and targeting our schools and bus stops.
Minneapolis Families for Public Schools (MFPS) is coordinating Sanctuary School teams, activating thousands of parents and caregivers across the metro area. Sanctuary Teams are school-based groups created to ensure that all students, and their families feel safe, welcomed, and supported in their schools. We organize to keep our school communities safe and cared for. We are training leaders to organize in their own schools and tell our stories in public.
There is so much at stake in our organizing. We demand a prohibition of ICE officers from entering school grounds. We demand more funding for our public schools. We demand investment in mental health and other support for students to heal from such unimaginable trauma as their parents and fellow classmates are being ripped from them. We demand investments in our neighborhoods, especially an end to evictions.

Minnesota is showing the country how to be brave. This federal administration has given the people a deal, as MFPS leader Shannon spoke on Today Explained last week, “You can either have your life or your humanity. Minnesotans have said very clearly we’ll take humanity everytime.” This is our bravery in action: showing up for each other.
