Michigan Black Mama's Day Bailout 2021

In Spring 2019, Michigan Liberation organized to free 15 Black Mothers from cages in Michigan who were jailed solely because of the immoral and unconstitutional practice of money bail—also referred to as wealth-based pretrial detention. In 2020, as we continued to organize to free more Black Mothers from the cages of the criminal legal system, we were devastated by the conditions people were forced to be in during the onslaught of the Covid-19 pandemic. We focused our bailout efforts on a Covid-19 rapid response bailout and was able to bailout 32 people across Michigan.


Our action and community organizing highlighted the role of profiteers in the bail bonds industry, exposed the massive underlying social inequities leading to contact with the legal system, and inspired community action. What started as a bailout has evolved into a quest for transformational change across the criminal legal system in Michigan and a commitment to making it happen. In community with the work of the National Bail Out, our teams were able to secure the release of Black mothers in three Michigan counties: Wayne, Oakland and Kalamazoo.

Teams are assembled to research who is currently being held because they are unable to pay bail, to assist with social service coordination if those bailed out want supportive resources, to ensure the bail process is done properly in each region, and to host a celebration party for our families and communities. 100% of funds raised will go toward this specific project. The research and bail out committee will prioritize Black mamas. In the event that we fundraise an abundance of resources or face obstacles on bailing out specific people, we will have clear criteria and process on who we will bail out next: prioritizing women of color and moms. Any additional resources after the bailouts will be put toward the celebration. We will post updates on the amount fundraised and how it is spent. Michigan Liberation is holding the funds.
