Maria's List Recommends Neighbor to Neighbor Action Fund

Neighbor to Neighbor Massachusetts Action Fund is building democracy by putting our people — working people who are Black, brown, and white, immigrants, and lifelong locals — at the center of civic engagement in their communities. By training members to be leaders in their communities, they are building the power to transform our government and change our world.

They get out the vote in every election and educate our communities about the values that are most important to us – prioritizing people and the planet over profit.

Established in 1996, Neighbor to Neighbor is a movement organization that builds power in its core cities: Worcester, Holyoke, Springfield, and Lynn. Their membership comprises workers, immigrants, women, and people of color. Members of N2N have been on the frontlines of every progressive Massachusetts victory, including, but not limited to, Massachusetts CORI Reform (2010), the fight for justice for parents in Lynn (2013), and the passage of earned sick time and an increased minimum wage (2014). In 2020, they played a critical role in advocating for a justice census collection and provided mutual aid in response to COVID-19. Additionally, they delivered one of the only 2020 victories for Massachusetts progressives when Senator Adam Gomez defeated incumbent Jim Welch. Senator Gomez was a City Councilor and a longtime member of Neighbor to Neighbor.

Neighbor to Neighbor plans to replicate the success it saw in 2020, this time with the Springfield City Council and mayoral races. Their membership is committed to turning out working-class and infrequent voters in all wards across the city. Neighbor to Neighbor has been encouraged by specific candidates in the race, who are focusing on major issues facing the community, such as policing, education, and housing.

Neighbor to Neighbor’s long-term vision is for Massachusetts Gateway Cities to become hubs of economic activity led by working-class people and immigrant communities. Their electoral organizing this year plays an integral role in this approach.
