Moonlighting for Democracy

Who we are: A group of concerned medical professionals determined to make a difference in this election. We want to prevent far-right conservatives from outlawing abortion, cutting Medicaid, and gutting efforts to address climate change.

Our call: We are each pledging to pick up an extra shift between now and the election and to donate our earnings to support progressive candidates in close Congressional races. We hope you'll join us in moonlighting for democracy!

Our candidates: We've identified six Democratic candidates in toss-up races where we think your effort can make a difference. These races get less attention and money than the Presidential or Senate races so your contributions go farther. You can read more about the candidates below. Donations through this form are split between their campaigns.

Amish Shah (Arizona 1st District) is an emergency medicine doctor serving in the Arizona House of Representatives, where he has worked to preserve access to reproductive health care, protect voting rights, and raise teacher pay. He is challenging a Freedom Caucus Republican who tried to block certification of the 2020 election, voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and vehemently opposes access to abortion.

Yadira Caraveo (Colorado 8th District) is a pediatrician and first-term congresswoman representing a highly competitive district north of Denver, which she won in 2022 by fewer than 1,700 votes. She has fought to cap the price of insulin, provide health care to undocumented immigrants, and protect access to abortion.

Curtis Hertel (Michigan 7th District) is a former Michigan State Senator running in the must-win toss-up district currently held by Rep. Elissa Slotkin, who is running for Senate. Hertel was instrumental in passing legislation that repealed the archaic 1931 law that banned abortion in Michigan, even in cases of rape and incest, and he is running against an anti-abortion extremist.

Janelle Bynum (Oregon 5th District) is an engineer who has represented a Portland area district in the Oregon state house for eight years, where she pushed for greater police accountability, affordable housing, and investments in clean energy. She has twice defeated the Republican who holds this U.S. House seat in earlier state house races.

Laura Gillen (New York 4th District) is an attorney and the first Democrat to be elected Hempstead Town Supervisor in 112 years. She is running to take back a toss-up district on Long Island that President Biden won in 2020 and is one of the Democrats' best pick up opportunities this year. Her opponent is a right-wing Republican who said he will vote for a national abortion ban.

Kirsten Engel (Arizona 6th District) is an environmental attorney and former state legislator who has focused on increasing funding for K-12 education and fighting the effects of climate change. She is challenging a Republican congressman who voted to block support for renewable energy and praised the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade.
