Sponsor me to write 31 poems throughout the month of May (kicking off on International Workers' Day) to raise funds for National Bail Out!
As much as 80% of the population of local jails across the united states--and over 550,000 people in total--consists of people who are incarcerated without even having been tried, convicted, or sentenced. (https://www.prisonpolicy.org/reports/pie2020.html) Many people--disproportionately Black & brown, disabled & mentally ill, and LGBTQ--remain in pretrial detention because they cannot afford bail (of which $10,000 is the median amount). People who remain incarcerated because they cannot afford bail are also more likely to be convicted. (https://reason.com/2018/12/19/report-imprisoning-people-who-cant-pay-b/)
NBO is a Black-led and Black-centered collective that organizes to end pretrial detention, cash bail, and mass incarceration. They are currently working to #FreeBlackMamas and caregivers so that they can spend Mothers' Day with their families.
Poems will be published on a daily basis over at najiapowrimo.tumblr.com.
About me:
I am a poet, musician and Victorianist. I have released one collection of poetry entitled wanderers, witch-talkers, and a corresponding audiobook / album, inspired by stereotypes that cast Moroccan women as witches. My poetry weaves themes of mythology, folklore, and superstition into depictions of the personal and the mundane. I have read my poetry internationally, including with the Oxford Review of Books. I am a former poetry reader at cahoodaloodaling, and I have been published in cahoodaloodaling, Trascender Magazine, and SICK Magazine (forthcoming).
