In a dangerous and misguided attack on our communities, Republican politicians across the country are threatening to defund public libraries.
Libraries are essential institutions that provide free access to information, education, and resources for people of all ages. They are especially important for low-income families and communities of color, and rural communities that often lack access to other resources.
Despite their significant importance, states like Florida, Missouri, Texas, and Idaho are working to pass legislation that will do everything from limiting access to books and resources, to reducing staff, forcing libraries to cut programs and services or outright close.
Bans on books and attempts to limit access to information are an outright attack on intellectual freedom and the right to read. By protecting libraries, we protect our ability to learn, grow, and explore new ideas.
