The NC Music Love Army (NCMLA) is a volunteer-based community of independent, creative, musicians, promoters, venue owners, and supporters working to achieve a more equitable, just and sustainable North Carolina and to break the GOP’s super-majority in the NC General Assembly.
The NCMLA supports: voter education, registration, and mobilization to promote: reproductive rights, expanding democracy, workers' rights, climate resilience, strengthening public education, and environmental/social justice.
The NC Music Love Army began as a spontaneous, grassroots effort in 2013 in reaction to then NC Governor Pat McCrory’s immoral actions including HB-2, the notorious “Bathroom Bill” which gathered widespread condemnation and business boycotts of the state.
Organized by professional musicians Caitlin Cary, Jon Lindsay, and others between 2013 and 2017 - the NCMLA presented countless performances, recorded and released dozens of new songs, and provided vocal support to the moral and electoral efforts attempting to turn back the regressive and destructive actions of Gov. McCrory and his allies.
Dozens of well-known NC musical artists participated including: American Aquarium, Rhiannon Giddens, the Old Ceremony, Hiss Golden Messenger, the Love Language, Chris Stamey, Pierce Freelon, and Chatham County Line. Many of the recordings are available online.
After the defeat of McCrory in 2016 the NCMLA gradually ceased activities. This 2024 mobilization is a revival, with the full cooperation and support of the original organizers.
