EBHS Against Matt Mowers

Why did you start this fundraising campaign if Matt Mowers is not even running in your district?

Having known Mowers for many years, we have been following his career and feel with certainty that he is unfit for office. Since we do not live in the district he has chosen to run in and therefore cannot vote, we felt it necessary to take other action. By organizing our classmates and families, we feel that we can make an impact.

Is this bullying or some high school drama nonsense? Why can’t you just let him chase his dream of being a politician?

No, this movement is not based on any personal gripes or sophomoric slights. In fact, many of us were one-time friends or social acquaintances with the candidate. Having had those relationships, we have seen first hand that Mowers, from a young age, has had ambition to run for office. Unfortunately, we also know that his reasons for seeking this career is not to make the world a better place or to defend an issue he finds important; it is solely to acquire power; the kind of politician that Americans are fed up with. We think it would be best to stop him before becoming entrenched in Washington.

Has he done anything publicly that you can point to that demonstrates this blind ambition?

Yes! In 2014, Mowers was subpoenaed to testify about his role in the Fort Lee Lane Closure scandal, more popularly known as Bridgegate. According to the New Jersey Star-Ledger, “Mowers was reportedly the campaign staffer who approached Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich to endorse Gov. Chris Christie in his bid for reelection. It was Sokolich's refusal to endorse the governor that is thought to have sparked the lane diversions, which snarled traffic in Fort Lee for hours a day during the second week in September.”

According to testimony, it was Mowers’ idea to create a spreadsheet to track political favors given in hopes of an endorsement including but not limited to “NFL games in Christie’s box in the Meadowlands … and even promised steel from the wreckage of the World Trade Center.” You can read more about this here.

But what about his actual politics? They can’t be that bad, right?

Unless you’re an avid Trump supporter, you’d probably consider his politics downright shameful. In fact, Mowers was appointed by Trump as his senior White House advisor to the State Department. Additionally, Mowers has recently been endorsed by Trump and has expressed his loyalty through vile rhetoric, which you can see daily while following his social media accounts. In one e-mail to his base, he sent a phony invoice to bill China for the costs associated with COVID-19. His website continues that China and the World Health Organization participated in an elaborate cover-up of the virus, not noting the failure of leadership in the USA to prevent mass death as has been done throughout the rest of the world.

It should be noted that Mowers has never held a job outside of working on political campaigns or being an outside advisor for campaigns. He has never worked on policy, never mind business, retail, or any other practical area where he could prove his understanding of what Americans need or how to get things done, as comes across in the few campaign issues he speaks to.

This was far too long for me to read, what should I take away?

We need leaders in government to bring us through this pandemic, a down economy, an ever-worsening environment due to global warming and constant threats on basic human rights. Matt Mowers relies on twisted rhetoric to achieve personal power in hopes of becoming a career politician to enrich himself at the expense of his constituents and the country. He is not what the country needs, but he has a real chance of winning his election.

We need to do what we can to stop him
