Leonard Peltier is the longest-serving political prisoner in U.S. history.
Peltier is serving two life sentences in a maximum-security federal prison for his alleged role in the deaths of two FBI agents during a shootout on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation in South Dakota in 1975. His supposed “crime” was aiding and abetting in a case where his co-defendants, principally charged with the murders, were found not guilty on grounds of self-defense.
In fact, the prosecutors have admitted they do not know who killed the agents and could not prove Mr. Peltier even committed a crime that day.
UN experts, U.S. Congressmembers, Amnesty International, the Democratic National Committee's Native American Caucus, the National Caucus of Native American State Legislators, the National Congress of American Indians, human rights leaders (such as Nelson Mandela, Coretta Scott King, and the Dalai Lama), and many others have called for Peltier to be released.
Leonard has the possibility of being granted his freedom at his parole hearing on June 10th. With your help, we’ve already sent more than 11,000 letters of support to the Parole Commission, but we aren’t done yet. We’re aiming to flood them with public support, and have lined up almost a dozen organizational partners to make it happen.
We can’t stop now. We must continue to do everything we can to secure Leonard’s freedom.
Contribute to Native Organizers Alliance Action Fund to support the call for the U.S. Parole Commission to finally free Leonard Peltier now.
