NWI NOW's Period Equity Project

"Until women, girls, and non-binary individuals are all safe, valued, and equal . . ." Northwest Indiana NOW will be there

"Periods should only stop a sentence not disrupt a girl's

education."

"No one would charge for a square of toilet paper."

Period poverty is the inability to afford or access menstrual products. It affects roughly 1 in 4 teen girls in the U.S., leading to missed school, severe stress, and health risks. Nearly 44% of teens report embarrassment due to this lack of access

The Period Equity Project (PEP)

  • puts free period products in the bathrooms of area middle and high schools
  • displays info posters about menstrual health in bathroom stalls
  • provides supplies in the nurse's office for students to take home
  • and stocks emergency underwear (including period panties) in the nurse's office, because bleed throughs happen

PERIOD POVERTY'S Impact on Teen Girls

  • School Attendance: 1 in 4 teens have missed class, or missed out on activities, because they lacked access to products.
  • Unsafe Practices: Due to financial limitations, 45% of teens have worn products longer than recommended, which can cause infections.
  • Mental Health: Lack of access contributes to shame, anxiety, and social isolation.
  • Disproportionate Impact: Period poverty affects Hispanic and lower-income households at higher rates, with 58% of surveyed adolescents not having enough products at home

WHY?!?

  • Menstrual products are often considered luxury items rather than health necessities
  • 78% of teens say they are taught more about the biology of frogs than the human female body.
  • Schools frequently lack free or accessible products in bathrooms
