Julia Mejia

#AllMeansAll for Hispanic Heritage Month

This Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s honor history by making it.

Julia Mejia—the first and only Afro-Latina ever elected to the Boston City Council—continues to be your bold and independent voice. With purpose and passion, she’s moved mountains for #AllMeansAll of our most vulnerable communities: passing over 20 pieces of legislation, securing millions in investments, and ensuring that those too often left behind are finally seen, heard, and affirmed.

Her accomplishments, among many others, include:

  • Establishing the Black Men and Boys Commission, which developed into the Office of Black Male Advancement with a budget of $1.8 million.
  • Creating the Office of Cultural Affairs and bringing into existence dedicated and culturally-competent liaisons aimed at improving the quality of life for the Latino, Cape Verdean, Vietnamese, and Caribbean communities.
  • Passing a Language Access Ordinance which mandates that the City of Boston release all communications in languages spoken by at least 5% of the population at the same time as it is released in English.
  • Leading advocacy to keep the John D. O’Bryant School (Boston’s most diverse exam school) in Roxbury following the City’s proposal to re-locate it to West Roxbury.
  • Acting as the loudest voice to ensure that the White Stadium overhaul is carried out with racial justice, socioeconomic equity, and community voice at the center.

And she is just getting started.

Julia is one of the loudest voices left on the Council. At a time when powerbrokers and political machines try to drown out the people, she continues to speak truth to power—boldly, courageously, and without fear.

But running a people-powered grassroots campaign without the backing of political insiders takes all of us. Julia needs every single dollar to bring her message to as many voters as possible and to keep our microphone strong.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s celebrate Julia’s leadership by investing in the future we believe in. Because keeping Julia in the people’s seat means keeping power where it belongs—with us.
