For my 21st birthday, instead of asking for gifts I'm asking for donations to these amazing women who are running for WINNABLE and FLIPPABLE State House seats in the Texas Legislature. These Women represent the best of Texas and will be crucial in staving off attacks from the far right Texas GOP, and uplifting communities in our state that need representation the most.

Kristian Carranza left college in her senior year to support her mom, helping her navigate health care challenges without insurance -- like the 4 million others in Texas who are currently uninsured. The experience inspired Kristian to dedicate her career to raising the voices of working families. Over the past 10 years, she has registered 10,000 voters across Texas, enrolled families in President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, and managed million-dollar budgets for candidates and causes that support the dreams of working people. Democrats in Texas need to make gains in order to expand Medicaid so families like Kristian's can get the healthcare that they not only need, but deserve. Now, she's running in House District 118, the Southside of San Antonio, where she grew up and found her passion for organizing and serving the people of Texas.

Born and raised in Houston’s Third Ward, Lauren Ashley Simmons first hand learned what it means to be part of a working class family. At 19, while a college student, Lauren became a mother– losing her financial safety net and had to become the provider for herself and her child. Being a teen mom, Lauren was denied Temporary Assistance for Needy families dozens of times– inspiring her passion for organizing and empowerment of working class and low-income communities. She became an advocate and union organizer, and she currently works organizing Black low-income women and black migrant women to ensure they get fair wages, benefits, and improved working conditions. She is also a proud member of the CWA union. Lauren gained attention online when she confronted HISD Superintendent Mike Miles after Governor Greg Abbott removed the democratically elected HISD school board, demanding that the Texas Government stop the attacks that are targeted on teachers and public education. Now, she’s running to defend the public schools she graduated from, and to give voice to HD146 the representation they deserve.

Angel Carroll is an organizer and advocate who’s drive for justice is rooted in her own experiences within the Texas Foster Care system. At 10 years old, she was placed in a juvenile detention center and within her first year she had been moved 12 times– being shuffled across the state and suffering abuse at a flawed and underfunded foster care system. Angel found herself testifying in front of the Texas Supreme Court and Criminal Court of Appeals in order to create the Texas Judicial Commission on Mental Health. Her hard work in Williamson and Dallas counties was recognized when Governor Abbott appointed her at the age of 23 to the Texas Juvenile Justice Advisory Board. Now at 28, Angel has spent her time organizing with nonprofits and government agencies on the best way to deal with vulnerable populations and overlooked communities, including instructing career readiness with residents in the Federal Bureau of Prisons to equip residents with skills to help them integrate into the workforce upon their release. Angel is running to bring an important perspective and voice to the Texas Legislature to serve the people of HD52, and to give a voice to young Texans in the foster care system who are facing the same challenges she did as a child.

These women are all passionate organizers who will bring a voice and representation to communities in Texas that have been overlooked and underserved by our State Government, and make long term investments into the infrastructure of Democracy within our state.
