In 2022, the Florida Legislature forced a question on the Alachua County ballot asking voters if they wanted to change the way County Commissioners are elected. Commissioners were elected at-large at the time, meaning that every voter in the county was able to vote in every Commission election. Tallahassee legislators wanted us to switch to single-member districts, meaning voters can only vote in the election for the Commissioner representing their single district.
Single-member districts passed narrowly. But not because the Tallahassee legislators made good arguments. Alachua County voters were flooded with disinformation in a campaign that was funded by out-of-county dark money. They misled voters into thinking some of our County's most respected Black leaders and organizations supported single-member County Commission districts, such as Commissioner Chuck Chestnut, Rodney Long, and the local NAACP. In fact, they all actually supported keeping at-large districts!
Now, you have only 1/5 of the representation you had in 2022. But it doesn't have to be that way. We have a chance to restore our full representation on the County Commission. Help restore your vote and your voice by donating to the campaign! And vote YES on At-Large Districts in November!
