Alabama Forward

On the Line: Fair Maps and Equitable Representation

On Wednesday, October 4, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the Alabama redistricting case Milligan vs. Merrill. The court’s decision in Milligan will affirm or undermine the ability of local citizens to hold their governments accountable to democratic standards. This case will have a defining impact on the Voting Rights Act and our ability to protect the voting rights of nonwhite voters throughout our country.

The civic power of our local communities is On the Line.

The independence of courts is on the line, which means Justice is On the Line. The future of our literal and collective family is On the Line.

Democracy, Freedom, and the Legacy of the Civil Rights Movement are On the Line.

Our Call

Amidst a rising tide of authoritarianism here in our country and abroad, we are working with Milligan v. Merrill plaintiffs and a national network of pro-democracy allies to build support for One Demand, Two Options.

  • One Demand: Permanent voting rights protections for all Americans

  • Two Options
  • (1) Passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act
  • (2) Ratifying a 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that expands voting rights protections for all Americans

As we say in one of our original songs, “We’re in love with One, Two.” And we can only make this happen with your help.

Be a Change Maker!

In this time of crisis, your donation to support our fight against the racist congressional voting district map while registering new voters and restoring voting rights for nonwhite Alabamians between the ages of 18-49 is more important than ever. Now through the end of December, we’re raising $10,000 to tackle our state’s most pressing needs.
