Defending the Rule of Law: A Conversation with Paul Fishman

Many of us are deeply uneasy about the state of our democracy.

We worry about the politicization of the Department of Justice, attacks on judicial independence, escalating corruption and cronyism, the erosion of democratic norms, and whether our institutions are still strong enough to withstand the pressures being placed upon them.

What happens when the rule of law itself becomes politicized?

And what can ordinary citizens do to help preserve democratic accountability? We all understand the stakes of the 2026 election cycle are high and that civic engagement matters now more than ever.

So, please join us for a timely and important conversation with Paul Fishman, one of New Jersey’s most respected former federal law enforcement officials.

Paul served as United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey from 2009 to 2017 after being appointed by President Obama. He also spent more than a decade as a federal prosecutor in New Jersey and served as senior counsel to U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno.

As New Jersey’s chief federal law enforcement officer, Paul oversaw major investigations involving political corruption, corporate fraud, civil rights, national security, public integrity, and organized crime.

Today, Paul leads the Crisis Management and Strategic Response practice at Arnold & Porter, advising executives, boards, and institutions confronting complex legal and governance challenges.

In this exclusive online discussion, Paul will offer his perspective on:

  • The growing strains on democratic institutions
  • The importance of an independent justice system
  • The role of Congress in checking executive overreach
  • And he will take your questions!

Insightful, candid, and deeply experienced, Paul Fishman brings both legal authority and real-world perspective to one of the defining questions of our time:

How do we preserve the rule of law in an era of democratic stress?

Join us on Thursday, June 18 from 8:00–9:00 PM ET for this important conversation supporting the OneNJ7 Action Fund summer organizing campaign.
