In San Diego, the open blue CA-53 congressional seat will be filled by either progressive Latina City Councilwoman Georgette Gomez or billionaire heiress Sara Jacobs.
Incumbent Rep. Susan Davis is retiring, and with California’s “top two” primary rules, the November election in this deep blue district will be between two Democrats. Both support Medicare for All. Both support a Green New Deal. But the life-experience they would bring to Congress is totally different.
During heiress Sara Jacob’s losing 2018 campaign for Congress, the San Diego Union Tribune accused her of inflating her resume. Now, she’s switched congressional districts and her billionaire grandparents have bankrolled her campaign via a richly-funded Super PAC. They’ve already donates $1.5 million and are the super PAC’s only donors!
Georgette’s parents were undocumented and worked minimum wage jobs. As a community organizer, Georgette worked on environmental justice and advocated for survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse. As the first LGBTQ Latina on the San Diego City Council, she chairs the public transit system and has fought Trump’s border wall.
Georgette is endorsed by the PCCC, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Pramila Jayapal, Jamie Raskin, Ro Khanna, Mark Takano, Dolores Huerta, Justice Democrats, Progressive Caucus, Sierra Club, California League of Conservation Voters, California Democratic Party, California Federation of Teachers, AFSCME, SEIU California, National Union of Healthcare Workers, UNITE HERE, Victory Fund, Equality PAC, and many others.
