Press Release On SCOTUS Decision About Mifepristone

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS ACCESS TO MIFEPRISTONE, BUT TENNESSEE WOMEN STILL FACE CHALLENGES

Jane George, candidate for Tennessee's 2nd District, acknowledges the Supreme Court's unanimous decision to keep the abortion pill mifepristone widely available as a step forward for reproductive rights. However, she emphasizes that state legislators still have the power to impose restrictions limiting women's access.

This ruling keeps mifepristone available, allowing it to be obtained by mail. Despite this, Tennessee's restrictive healthcare environment means that women will still find it difficult to access this essential medication.

"The Supreme Court's decision is a step forward in the right direction for women's health and reproductive freedom," said Jane George. "While we are pleased with the decision, it is crucial to understand that the legal battles challenging mifepristone are far from over. Tennessee women continue to face significant barriers imposed by legislators. As your representative, I will be another voice in Congress fighting to defend and expand these essential rights."

Mifepristone's use has increased due to FDA rulings that allow it to be safely prescribed through telehealth consultations and sent through the mail. This has expanded access to the drug for women in both states where abortion is legal and those where it is not.

Writing for the court, Justice Brett Kavanaugh noted that concerns about FDA's regulations should be directed "to the people and their elected representatives," underscoring the importance of legislative action in protecting reproductive rights.

"Access to mifepristone is crucial for many women, especially those in rural or underserved areas," George continued. "In Tennessee, where healthcare access is strained, these measures provide a lifeline for women seeking reproductive care. However, this is not a complete win, and the fight for reproductive rights is far from over."

Jane George calls on her supporters to remain engaged and proactive. "While we celebrate today's decision, we must remain vigilant. The fight for reproductive rights continues, and the upcoming elections are critical. We need leaders who stand up for women's health and protect our freedoms."

As the election approaches, Jane George emphasizes her commitment to reproductive rights and urges voters to support candidates who will uphold these values. "Together, we can ensure that every woman has the right to make her own healthcare decisions."
